About the data

Source: Philippe Jorion & William N. Goetzmann, “Global Stock Markets in the Twentieth Century,” Journal of Finance 54 (1999). Dollar indexes are translated into US dollars; real indexes are deflated by each country’s Wholesale Price Index. Months with no data are shown as gaps.

In memoriam. This work was written with my friend and co-author Philippe Jorion. See the University of California’s memorial tribute, and my own remembrance of him in the Financial Analysts Journal, “In Memoriam: Philippe Jorion.”
